Tonight promises to be REALLY cool.  We're greeted at the Combined Task Force base camp by Raoul from the special events team.  First the whole car has to get scanned (yipes! hello gamma rays!) and then WE get scanned, and boy does that feel weird.

We're led through the camp to the hangar-cum-night-spot called "11 Degrees North" (guess why?)...

Third time's the charm!  This time the 9:30-going-on-10:00 pick-up actually happens, and we're taken to the Djiboutian Art Institute where we meet a room full of about 25 students.  To start things off, we suggest that they play a bit for us, and we for them, so that we can see on what page we can all start together for the workshop.

It seem...

So - today up and at 'em for a 9:30 pick-up for a 10:00 workshop.  I'm actually excited to finally interact with some local young musicians.  Giving concerts is great and all, but we're here to do an exchange!  Two-way communication.

It's becoming obvious that schedules in Djibouti are a bit more flexible than in some of the other places we've been.  This suits me ok, actually, and we're picked up more or less as scheduled to head over to Omar's house for the first of the 3 concerts we'll be giving here.

Jeff is nominated as Sound Tech for the evening and vows to set up the "...

Djibouti Chronicles - Day 2 - On the AM Radio

We were forewarned that the workshop scheduled for today has been postponed by a day, and for once we have the luxury of sleeping in!  But since they start putting away the good stuff around 10:00 at the breakfast buffet, Jeff and I decide to be sure to be up in time for that anyway.

We're picked up around 11:30 by one of Omar's lieutenants so to...

Djibouti Chronicles - Day 1 - Welcome to Djibouti!

Djibouti... The crossroads of humanity.

Nestled in amongst several of the Earth's most ancient human cultures - Ethiopia, Somalia, Eritrea, and just a short hop across the channel from Yemen - Djibouti is the gateway to the Red Sea.  It sits along a natural fault line which makes in the only deep-water port in the region.  So, despite it's disparaging lac...
