Togo Chronicles - Day 9 - Lome - Chillin' out and flying home

A lie-in, a leisurely brunch at the aptly named "Belle Epoque" hotel, a little bit of tourism and window shopping "pour la forme" and one last pleasant open-air meal with the Embassy folks.  What with all our trials and tribulations around being properly caffeinated, Joe Welsh gifts us with a packet of some local brew to take home ;-)  I have one last plate of ...

Embassy breakfast once again - can't beat the "rapport qualité prix" (value for the price) in this town.  Brenda kindly offers to try to get us a real espresso from the machine in the Chargé d'Affaire's office ;-)  Then into a thankfully air conditioned conference facility at the Embassy to meet with a room full of musicians to talk about...

Up and at 'em.  We've arranged for me to get picked up to go have breakfast at the Embassy, since the spread here at the hotel leaves much to be desired for being so overpriced.  There's been a bit of a mix up with the cars and chauffeurs, but I still make it there in time to get something in my belly, and some caffeine in my veins before the workshop starts.

R.A.S.  - French for "nothing to report".  A day of quiet - a chance to sleep in, catch up on correspondence and Facebook ;-)  Lunch by the beach (a little less exotic than it sounds) and a stroll through the nearly empty (on Sunday) Grand Marché in downtown Lomé.  Apparently it's likely our last ride with our favorite Chauffeur,...

Then it's back to the hotel for some rest (I opt for an actual nap) before heading down the street for the sound check for tonight's VIP performance.  We get there to find that what was supposed to be a full set-up and sound check that morning was merely an equipment drop :-P  So, pretty much nothing is set up, so there's nothing for us to do....

Togo Chronicles - Day 5 - Lome - Morning - SOS Children's Village Visit

Simon Hankinson, the local Deputy Chief of Mission (fancy name for substitute Ambassador a.k.a. the current head honcho) has taken sympathy with us over the utter impossibility of getting a decent cup of coffee around here.  Instant Nescafé's just not doing the job on these early morning starts - so he's generously offered for us to have breakfast with him and ...

Togo Chronicles - Day 4 - Lome - University visit & Campfire sing-a-long

After a bit of hemming and hawing over departure times, I decide to head back to Lomé with the early birds around 7am (so unlike me!) while Jeff sleeps in a bit longer back in Atakpamé.

I'm looking forward to some much needed downtime, both in the car, and once settled back into the hotel in Lomé.  From here on out, we'll be ...
